You’ve got mail: Goa police say drugs are entering the state via post

Goa police have warned that drugs are entering the state through postal services and courier deliveries. Earlier this year, police intercepted a consignment of hashish smuggled into the state, hidden inside a steam iron packaged for delivery. Concerned about the growing issue, the Goa Police have partnered with courier and postal service operators to curb drug trafficking.

The initiative is part of the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan', a three-year plan aimed at reducing drug use and trafficking in the country. Recently, police held an awareness meeting with over 75 courier and postal service representatives to educate them about the evolving methods used by traffickers to conceal drugs. One such method, known as "dead-drop", involves using courier services to smuggle drugs by sending parcels to a designated location after the buyer pays the seller.

The police emphasized the importance of vigilance, adherence to KYC norms, and prompt reporting of suspicious parcels to law enforcement agencies. The most commonly seized drugs in Goa include ganja, charas, LSD, MDMA/ecstasy, and cocaine. Traffickers are increasingly using discreet methods to procure, store, and distribute drugs, with social media, courier services, and tourist areas being common venues for drug circulation. In 2026, Goa police have booked 122 cases and arrested 135 people involved in drug trafficking.
