Seven killed, 28 injured in Maumba after minibus crashes into escarpment

A Mitsubishi FH minibus veered off the road and plummeted 500 meters down an escarpment in Maumba, Makueni County, Kenya, on Friday, August 14, resulting in at least seven fatalities and 28 injuries, according to police and eyewitnesses. The minibus was being driven by an unidentified individual and transporting an undetermined number of passengers when the driver lost control.

Upon impact, six men and one woman succumbed to their injuries and were identified by police, while four others sustained serious injuries and were transferred to Wote County Hospital for specialized care. An additional 24 passengers experienced minor injuries and received treatment at Matiliku Sub-County Hospital, where they are currently in stable condition.

The crash site was visited by police officers, who conducted an investigation into the cause of the accident. The seven deceased were taken to Kilome Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations and identification, while the minibus remained at the scene, with plans to tow it underway. This incident adds to a series of road accidents that have occurred across the country, with at least 16 people killed and 40 others suffering serious injuries in separate incidents on the same day.

Despite ongoing enforcement and public awareness campaigns, road fatalities continue to rise in Kenya. Authorities attribute most crashes to reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving, as well as mechanical defects such as worn-out tires, faulty brakes, and poor vehicle maintenance. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service have repeatedly emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic rules, maintaining roadworthy vehicles, and exercising caution, particularly on highways and accident-prone sections of the road network.
