Lee Seok-gyu, who was born in 1921, was a Korean independence activist who was imprisoned for 10 months for participating in the independence movement in . Lee passed away on at the age of 101. At the funeral, Lee's family read a eulogy, saying, "The most fulfilling moment of my life was August 15, liberation day. I was overjoyed when I heard the news that Japan had surrendered unconditionally." The government posthumously awarded Lee the Order of Independence Merit, the Order of Merit for National Foundation, and the Presidential Commendation. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo attended the funeral and said, "Lee Seok-gyu devoted his life to the country and the people, and we will never forget his patriotic spirit." Lee was buried in the Seoul National Cemetery.
