Pas says GE16 could be held anytime amid PH-BN tensions, Melaka polls

Pas believes several factors could lead to the 16th General Election (GE16) being held at any time, including the expiration of Melaka's state assembly term and the strained relationship between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional. Pas vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad emphasized that the situation should alert all parties to prepare for the possibility of an early election.

One scenario is the Melaka state election, whose term ends on December 27. Another potential scenario is an election this year, before the new Parliament's first sitting or Sarawak's legislative assembly commences on February 14, 2027. The relationship between PH and BN is another factor, described by Idris as lukewarm, with recent political developments suggesting the two coalitions could face challenges.

He referenced comments from ex-Umno leader Khairy Jamaluddin, who claimed that the trust between Anwar Ibrahim and Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reached its lowest point. Recent state election results, such as BN's victory in Johor and Negri Sembilan, contribute to Pas's push for an early election. Idris clarified that decisions on political cooperation rest with the party's central leadership, not the states.

He also stated that Pas's strength lies in its membership and grassroots organization, with 155 branches in Tumpat and over 13,000 members.
