Google unveils latest Pixel 11 phones with slimmer cameras and more AI features

On August 12, Google unveiled its latest Pixel 11 series of smartphones in Singapore, starting at S$1,299. The new lineup includes the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, with corresponding starting prices of S$1,299, S$1,599, S$1,819, and S$2,499. A highlight of the new models is slimmer cameras, featuring a more powerful zoom and enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities aimed at simplifying user interactions.

Key AI features include live translation for videos, podcasts, and voice messages. The Pro models introduce a tool called HiLight, which assigns a color to favorite contacts and causes the phone to glow in that color when they call and it is face down. This complements the "Flip to Shhh" feature, which puts the phone into "do not disturb" mode when placed face down.

Camera upgrades consist of a new Magic Capture mode, which automatically captures a series of photos and videos with a single shutter button press. The cameras also boast improved light sensitivity, and for Pro models, Instant Night Sight allows for faster and easier shots in low-light conditions, eliminating the need to hold the phone still during exposure.

Google's goal is to provide compelling reasons for users to upgrade to new models and to broaden the adoption of its AI tools. According to Forrester senior analyst Andrew Cornwall, Google continues to leverage new software features, primarily around AI, as the primary justification for upgrading. Despite not matching the popularity of Apple's iPhone, Google has been progressively integrating more AI functionalities into its Pixel phones since 2023.

During a recent presentation to reporters, Google revealed that the new devices will double the storage capacity, starting at 256 gigabytes. Other notable features include a 30-hour battery life and faster wireless charging.
