Albert Tei denies defaming Azam Baki

Albert Tei, a businessman, has denied accusations of defaming former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki. Tei submitted his defence in the Shah Alam High Court following Azam's lawsuit in May. Azam is seeking damages and an injunction due to statements Tei made on a podcast and various social media platforms.

These statements allegedly included claims that Tei accused Azam of manipulating MACC investigations, acting as an intermediary in a Sabah corruption case, abusing his position for political protection, and attempting to silence the businessman. Azam also alleged that Tei suggested a compensation deal and a "guarantee letter" to ensure Azam's silence, and influenced prosecutors to issue a "No Further Action" decision.

Tei refuted these claims, stating that Azam had selectively highlighted portions of a two-hour-and-11-minute podcast while disregarding the overall context, chronology, and explanations. Tei argued that his remarks were substantially true or constituted fair comment and an honest opinion on matters of public interest. He maintained that the allegations stemmed from documents, communications, and events involving Azam and his lawyer concerning alleged corruption related to Sabah's mineral-mining licences.

Tei further contended that his purpose was to address issues of governance and accountability rather than maliciously targeting Azam.

Tei's lawyer, Mahajoth Singh, informed the court that the case manager had recently instructed both parties to submit their pre-trial documents before the next case management hearing scheduled for November 11.
