First AW189 helicopters lands as MMEA steps up patrols, rescues at sea

Subang Jaya, August 13 — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has bolstered its maritime security capabilities with the arrival of the first four Medium Lift AW189 helicopters, marking a significant step in protecting the country's expansive 556,285 square kilometre waters. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail highlighted the helicopter's role in aerial surveillance, enforcement, search and rescue, medical evacuation, and special operations, emphasizing the agency's commitment to combating cross-border crime, fisheries encroachment, and smuggling.

The RM529 million investment in the four helicopters was secured through a five-year contract with manufacturer Leonardo. The AW189 boasts an impressive operating range of 1,166km, a top speed of 313km per hour, and the capacity to operate in challenging weather conditions while accommodating five crew members and 14 passengers.

The procurement was completed on schedule, and the remaining three helicopters are anticipated to join the fleet by the end of December, bringing the total to nine. The agency's air fleet expansion extends beyond the addition of helicopters, with plans to receive a mothership in the first quarter of the following year. Since July 24, MMEA has completed over 116,192 inspections, seized assets worth more than RM4.38 billion, and conducted 638 successful search and rescue operations, rescuing 638 victims.

Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Awang Alik Jeman and MMEA director-general Admiral Maritime Datuk Rosli Abdullah were among the dignitaries present at the Subang Maritime Air Station press conference.
