Colombia asks for supplies but not foreign rescue personnel after the earthquake

Colombia's government has sought international aid in the form of supplies following Monday's magnitude 7.4 earthquake, but has not requested foreign rescue teams, according to President Nayib Bukele. The Colombian leader stated that local authorities are already providing assistance, so no additional personnel support is needed at this time.

El Salvador has offered to send two cargo planes loaded with supplies, while other countries such as Mexico, Ecuador, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, and Spain have also extended help. However, the United States has chosen to provide monetary aid instead, pledging $15.5 million for emergency shelter, food, protection, and damage assessment.

Colombia has requested specific support from the international community through a diplomatic note, which does not constitute a formal appeal for rescue personnel. UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that the organization remains in communication with Colombian authorities and supports their response.
