Johor sets up special team to probe claims of Singapore waste dumped in Pontian

Johor has established a dedicated team to investigate claims that construction waste from Singapore is being illegally dumped in Pontian. Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor announced the team's formation with a comprehensive approach to thoroughly investigate the allegations. The special team will comprise various agencies such as local authorities, the police, district offices, and the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWCorp).

The purpose is to identify and investigate any illegal dumping activities, including ongoing operations.

Mohd Jafni addressed concerns about construction waste allegedly entering Johor from Singapore and being dumped in Pontian without the required permits or approvals. He emphasized that such activities should not be tolerated and that appropriate action will be taken based on the applicable laws. Authorities have received reports of these allegations, primarily in Sungai Karang, Pontian, and surrounding areas, but the investigations are still ongoing.

If the probe reveals that these activities are still taking place, an integrated enforcement team will be promptly activated. The state government reiterated its commitment to taking stringent action against any parties who exploit Johor as a location for illegal waste disposal. An integrated enforcement approach is crucial to prevent future occurrences and safeguard the interests of the people and the environment.

DAP parliamentarian Lim Lip Eng had previously called for accountability following reports alleging that a convoy of trailers from Singapore had been dumping construction waste in Pontian for the past two years. Lim questioned potential negligence in enforcement and checks at the Singapore-Johor checkpoint if the allegations prove to be true.
