Japan Successfully Launches H3 Rocket with Michibiki Satellite

On Tuesday at 4:23 a.m., the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully launched an H3 rocket from its Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture. This launch carried the Michibiki No. 7 positioning satellite, which reached its intended orbit approximately 30 minutes later. The H3 rocket, a two-stage liquid-propellant rocket developed jointly by JAXA and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., marked the first successful launch of its kind since a December failure.

Makoto Arita, JAXA's H3 project manager, attributed the success to the agency's commitment to improve reliability after previous failures. The Michibiki satellite, Japan's version of the GPS system, provides highly precise positioning services with a potential accuracy of several centimeters. The Michibiki No. 1 satellite was launched in 2010, and the government aims to establish a network of seven such satellites to ensure continuous positioning without relying on foreign satellite systems.

Currently, six satellites are operational, including the newly launched No. 7 unit. The Michibiki No. 7 satellite, when its solar panels are deployed, measures about 19 meters in width. In addition to its positioning capabilities, it can disseminate emergency information to compatible devices during disasters.
