Japan successfully launches H3 rocket carrying positioning satellite

TANEGASHIMA, Japan (Kyodo) -- Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency successfully launched an H3 rocket on Tuesday, placing a positioning satellite into orbit for the second consecutive successful launch. The H3 rocket No. 9 ascended from Tanegashima Space Center on Tanegashima, a small island in southwestern Japan, carrying the Michibiki No. 7 satellite, part of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System.

This system provides location information for smartphones and vehicle navigation. The launch, which was initially scheduled for last Friday and then delayed to Monday due to inclement weather, marks a significant achievement for Japan's flagship rocket following a failure in December. Last year, JAXA successfully launched another H3 rocket in June, deploying multiple miniature satellites.

Currently, five Michibiki satellites are providing positioning services, and the government aims to have seven in orbit for full coverage without relying on other countries. Despite the mixed track record of the H3 rocket, this successful launch demonstrates Japan's commitment to advancing its satellite technology.
