Typhoon Dolphin makes landfall in China after flight cancellations, evacuations

Typhoon Dolphin struck China's eastern coast on Sunday, causing widespread disruption across the region. The powerful storm triggered over a thousand flight cancellations and prompted evacuations as it moved inland from Yuhuan City in Zhejiang Province. Wind speeds near the center of the typhoon reached over 150km/h as it made landfall at around 5:30 PM.

Nearly 1,400 flights in and out of Shanghai's two main airports were grounded, while Hangzhou's airport saw 270 cancellations. The effects of the storm extended to Hong Kong, where a record high temperature of 36.9°C was recorded due to warm air pushed by the typhoon. In Okinawa, Japan, seven people suffered minor injuries and 5,290 households lost power.

Taiwan also experienced the storm's wrath, with dozens of ferry services halted and over 180 flights cancelled. China's National Meteorological Centre issued a red alert - its most severe warning - forecasting extraordinary torrential rain in central and eastern Zhejiang. Over 99,000 people were relocated from risky areas in Fujian ahead of the typhoon's arrival.

While the storm was expected to weaken after landfall, its outer subsiding air would continue to bring extremely hot weather to the territory through Tuesday.
