Iran refuses to reopen Hormuz until US meets demands

Teheran, the capital of Iran, has announced it will not reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz until the United States addresses Iran's specific demands, which include compensation for war damages. Since late February, Iran has effectively blocked the strait following US and Israeli attacks, and now seeks to charge tolls for ships attempting to bypass its preferred route.

This move comes after a ceasefire collapse in April and a June memorandum aimed at peace talks. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that discussions with Oman over the strait's management were nearing completion, but reopening the Hormuz remains contingent on Iran's terms and compensation for the June agreement violation.

Iran's security chief, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, listed demands that include an end to aggression against Iran and its allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq, as well as lifting a US counterblockade of Iranian ports, ending sanctions, releasing frozen assets, and compensating for wartime damages. The Revolutionary Guards have vowed to keep the strait closed until the enemy accepts all their conditions, describing it as a "theatre of war" rather than just a waterway.

Recent attacks on ships and oil facilities in the region have intensified tensions, with the United Arab Emirates condemning Iranian missile strikes on a UAE tanker and the UK reporting a ship fire off Oman. Oman condemned the attacks but urged against actions that jeopardize progress. Meanwhile, Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked a Saudi oil facility, further escalating the ongoing conflict in the region.
