Typhoon Dolphin Makes Landfall in East China After Red Alert

Typhoon Dolphin struck the eastern coast of China on Sunday evening, following Beijing's issuance of its most severe storm warning. Beijing's maximum wind force near the storm's center reached 42 meters per second. The typhoon made a second landfall a half-hour later on Wenzhou's coast, Zhejiang province. Beijing's two primary airports halted 1,384 flights, while Hangzhou suspended over 300 flights.

Over 300 rail services were canceled, and Shanghai's subway and long-distance bus services were halted. Shanghai also moved 100,000 residents to safety. The typhoon forced more than 390,000 people in Taizhou to evacuate. Extreme summer weather in China has caused numerous fatalities and substantial economic losses. Vast areas of the nation have experienced heavy rainfall since early July, leading to flash flooding and crop damage.

President Xi Jinping ordered a "full-scale" disaster prevention and relief response after deadly storms hit China in July. Rail operators suspended services in parts of the Yangtze River Delta region, with disruptions expected until Thursday. Major ports near Shanghai, including Zhoushan, halted operations. The meteorological authority predicted heavy to torrential rains from Sunday to Wednesday in several regions, including Fujian, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Hebei, Beijing, and Tianjin.

Beijing's water authority stated that cumulative rainfall from Tuesday to Saturday would reach torrential levels, with extremely heavy rain anticipated in mountainous and some southern areas.
