Sunbird's iMessage app for Android is back after a major privacy snafu

Sunbird, an iMessage app for Android, has returned to the Google Play Store after a three-year hiatus due to a significant privacy issue. The app allows Android users to participate in iPhone texts and group chats without facing any encryption or interoperability issues. However, despite this accomplishment, one problem remained: the text bubbles remained green, indicating to iPhone users the presence of an Android user.

To address this, Sunbird offers the option to change the chat bubbles to blue, aligning them with iPhone chat bubbles. The platform claims to resolve any lingering integration issues after the adoption of RCS (Rich Communications Services) by Apple in 2024, which enhanced interoperability with iPhone users. The app connects to a remote server that registers the Android device with an Apple ID, allowing it to authenticate the ID as a Mac or authorized hardware node.

This results in the display of blue text bubbles, a feature that has been praised by Sunbird. According to a survey, 30 percent of Android users have considered switching to an iPhone due to pressure and mockery, while nearly a quarter of iPhone users wouldn't date an Android user. Sunbird promises future integration with WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, as well as AI tools that maintain user privacy.

The app is free to download, but offers a subscription model at $3 per month or $24 per year, with a 14-day free trial available.
