Proxmox releases full support for the Arm64 architecture, with a few key caveats

Proxmox has announced that their Virtual Environment is now compatible with 64-bit ARM processors. I tested this on an Ampere Altra Dev Platform, the same machine where I previously booted Windows on Arm and experimented with various GPUs, including testing Houdini's native arm64 support. Installing Proxmox on the Ampere Altra was straightforward, as it supports UEFI/ACPI hardware, unlike Raspberry Pis and most single-board computers that use a Device Tree setup.

I encountered a minor issue installing Ubuntu 24.04.1 from an arm64 minimal server live CD within the VM and opened a related issue on the Proxmox forums.

Proxmox's official support currently focuses on NVIDIA Grace Hopper and Vera server platforms. However, they offer best-effort support on other UEFI-enabled ARMv9-A or newer hardware, which generally works for ARMv8-A as well. Hosts must boot through UEFI and describe hardware using ACPI.

Device-tree-only single-board computers, such as Raspberry Pis, are not officially supported. However, there are projects that enable UEFI support on Raspberry Pi 5, as well as other popular single-board computers like the Rockchip RK3588. Update: A Mastodon user successfully ran the forked Raspberry Pi 5 UEFI project on a Pi 4, while another YouTube user got it working on a Pi 5 manually installing software on top of Pi OS 13 (Trixie) and disabling NetworkManager and cloud-init.

Other main Armv9 platforms tested include Apple's M-series computers (some older models might work with Asahi Linux) and systems based on the Cix P1 SoC in the Radxa Orion O6, Minisforum MS-R1, and Framework AI PC Mainboard.
