Sunbird launches its iMessage for Android app, expecting you to trust it in the name of blue bubbles

Sunbird, the Android messaging app, has recently launched its iMessage for Android app after a long hiatus in private beta. The app, which aims to bring the iMessage experience to Android users and iPhone users dealing with green bubbles, was halted in 2023 due to security concerns. These concerns revolved around the app's method of accessing users' Apple IDs and acting as a middleman to relay messages.

At the time, a vulnerability was discovered that exposed over 630,000 files, as the data was never stored on Sunbird's own servers.

The newly launched iMessage for Android app is currently in an open beta and can now be downloaded from the Google Play Store. Sunbird claims that the app uses end-to-end encryption for messages both in transit and at rest. The company states that messages are encrypted on the user's device and never stored on their servers. Each user's iMessage connection runs in its own private space, which is terminated when the user disconnects.

One of the app's recent updates includes a priority inbox, offering a decluttered experience with primary and secondary tabs for better organization. Sunbird's iMessage for Android app combines RCS messaging with Apple's proprietary service, providing a more universal experience for users. While Sunbird emphasizes the security of its app, users should still exercise caution when utilizing any app that requires account information.
