Russia says seven killed as Ukrainian drone hits crowded Russian beach

Seven individuals were tragically lost in southern Russia on Monday after debris from a Ukrainian drone impacted a crowded beach in the city of Gelendzhik, according to local authorities. The victims included three children, the Krasnodar region announced. It remains uncertain whether the occurrence was caused by a Russian air defense downing the drone or the drone crashing.

An additional 40 people sustained injuries, with 21 of them being hospitalized and 19 receiving medical attention, as reported by regional governor Veniamin Kondratiev. He conveyed his deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. Footage of the incident revealed automatic gunfire seconds before the explosion, causing the drone to veer sharply and crash into the shore.

Ukrainian officials have claimed Russian air defense forces were responsible for shooting down the drone over a beach packed with tourists. Ukraine maintains it exclusively targets Russia's military and economic infrastructure in its conflict with the country. Russia's Krasnodar region has been a frequent target of Ukrainian forces in the past.

The Novorossiysk Naval Base, serving as Russia's main Black Sea Fleet hub, resides approximately 25 miles away from Gelendzhik. President Vladimir Putin reportedly possesses a residence near the town; however, Kremlin spokespersons have denied any connection. Over the past month, Ukraine has intensified lethal strikes on Russia, targeting energy infrastructure, weapon factories, military hardware sites, and shipping facilities.

From July 24 to July 31, at least 61 people lost their lives and 327 were injured due to Ukrainian drone strikes and shelling, as reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry. In July 18, eight individuals were killed by Ukrainian drone attacks in Russia, marking the deadliest incident inside the nation in over two years. Concurrently, Ukraine experienced the deadliest month of the war since April 2022, with Russian attacks causing at least 377 civilian casualties and 2,129 injuries.

Another deadly drone attack occurred overnight Tuesday, resulting in five fatalities and six injuries in the Moscow region, as reported by state-run TASS news agency.
