Over 25 firefighters battle blaze in Dublin mountains

Yesterday, a significant wildfire erupted in the Dublin Mountains, prompting an extensive response from over 25 firefighters and other emergency services. The blaze, which reignited after preliminary efforts to extinguish it over the weekend, was reported by district officer Darren O' Connor on RTÉ's Morning Ireland. O' Connor explained that the firefighting team consisted of four pumped appliances, a water tanker, a wildfire jeep, and a senior officer stationed in Glencullen.

As the fire burned, it was forced to change direction and direction by a significant shift in wind speed. This caused the smoke to rise above the mountain, only to descend over south Dublin later in the night. Locals in the vicinity of Glencullen reported a distinct smell of smoke, indicating the fire's proximity to their area.

O' Connor highlighted that the ground in the affected region was extremely dry, with vegetation and peat lacking the necessary moisture levels. According to him, it would take approximately a week of consistent rainfall to restore these moisture levels to their normal state, which would effectively eliminate or significantly reduce the fire.

He described this summer as one of the most challenging periods experienced by the Dublin Fire Brigade in recent years, with numerous significant fires occurring along the border with Wicklow.

Despite the ongoing efforts, the cause of the fire remained unknown at this stage. O' Connor stated that wildfires of this nature typically ignite near pathways and roadways. It is currently impossible to determine the precise source of the ignition, but the fire service is monitoring the situation closely. The senior officer in Glencullen is overseeing the monitoring process, and the local landowner is also involved in managing the situation.
