Sony Launches New ECM-W5 Wireless Microphones With RM1,499 Price Tag

Sony officially unveiled the ECM-W5 wireless microphones in Malaysia, featuring a system that utilizes two transmitters connected to a single receiver. The microphones boast a line-of-sight range of 500 cubic metres, with a new design that minimizes audio disruptions in dense radio-frequency environments. A key innovation is the Multi Interface (MI) Shoe, capable of transmitting high-quality 32-bit float audio directly to compatible cameras in a single file, eliminating the need for external recorders and separate audio files.

The ECM-W5 also includes up to 64GB of built-in storage, allowing for 32-bit float backup audio recordings directly on the transmitter, resulting in 90 hours of audio at 32-bit float/48 kHz or 60 hours at 24-bit/96kHz. This feature enables creators to capture a wide range of sounds without constant gain adjustments or risk of clipping.

The microphones support up to four channels of in-camera audio, ideal for various content creation scenarios, such as interviews and panel discussions. The new wireless microphones will be sold alongside Sony's ECM-W5T wireless transmitters, both available from authorized retailers and Sony stores starting early December. The ECM-W5 will retail for RM1,499, with a preorder incentive offering a free Creator Essential Kit, valued at RM260, which includes a PGYTECH Tech Organiser Mini V2 and a Smallrig Foldable Multi-tools Kit.
