OpenAI named its new agent system Dots. It’s already causing confusion.

OpenAI has introduced a new AI agent system called Dots, but the name has already stirred confusion among internet users. The issue stems from the fact that "dots" is a name already associated with two other companies, leading to potential brand confusion. One of these companies, Shanghai Shengdongshizhang Technology, filed a US trademark application for DOTS back in April 2025, covering AI chatbot and personal-assistant software.

This parallels OpenAI's new agent name, making the situation particularly on-the-nose for the new product. Another company named Dots, which operates in the women's fashion industry, has also faced issues due to the name clash. The RedNote social media company spun off an AI group called Dots Studio in 2022, making the name even more problematic.

On top of these conflicts, there's Elon Musk's SpaceXAI, which recently acquired a domain name called Dot.com. This move has raised suspicions among users, who suspect a possible coincidence or even a deliberate jab at OpenAI. SpaceXAI's redirect to Grok Bot adds fuel to the fire, as users speculate that the name confusion might benefit Musk's AI company.

Despite the accusations, SpaceXAI has not publicly commented on the situation. The confusion surrounding OpenAI's Dots name is likely to persist as the AI agent system makes its debut and faces a crowded digital landscape.
