Dangote oil refinery launch at Lamu port

Aliko Dangote, Africa's wealthiest businessman, inaugurated a $16 billion oil refinery project in Kenya on Wednesday. The groundbreaking ceremony took place at Lamu Port in northern Kenya, attended by Kenyan President William Ruto, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, and other African leaders. The refinery, scheduled for completion in 2030, is anticipated to be one of the largest energy sector investments in the region.

It is designed to boost the supply of refined petroleum products in East Africa, decrease reliance on imports, and help countries conserve foreign exchange spent on fuel. Dangote explained that the project aims to make East Africa self-sufficient in refined petroleum products, drawing on the experience of his Lagos refinery, which has a capacity of 700,000 barrels per day.

Dangote's company has offered regional governments a combined 30% stake in the project, granting participating countries a vested interest. A $450 million engineering contract for the project was awarded to Engineers India Limited. The refinery will be situated at Lamu Port, a major infrastructure project on Kenya's northern coast that connects the country's northern region to international maritime trade routes.

Kenyan officials estimate that East Africa's annual demand for petroleum products ranges from 20 million to 30 million metric tonnes. Industry experts predict that the region will require refining capacity of over one million barrels per day to meet its growing demand. The refinery is expected to generate over 50,000 jobs and foster economic opportunities through increased industrial activity, local supply chains, and associated infrastructure development.

The project comes at a time when East Africa is grappling with high fuel prices and continued dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
