Ruto tells off ‘brokers’ over Ksh 2.2T Dangote refinery

President William Ruto addressed those who oppose the East African Refinery project in Lamu County, calling them extortionists and brokers. The Ksh 2.2 trillion project, set to be constructed by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, is seen as a strategic investment for energy security in Kenya and the region. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Ruto urged Kenyans to consider investing in the project through the National Infrastructure Fund and an upcoming initial public offering.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni praised the project as a game changer for regional integration, while Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted the potential benefits for his country. The refinery will have a capacity to process 700,000 barrels of oil per day and produce 1000MW of power, with an additional 500MW to be added to the national grid. Dangote Group plans to create 60,000 jobs and build a training school for 1000 individuals.
