Trump launches America.gov with AI chatbots at its core

President Trump has launched America.gov, a new digital portal aimed at providing users with easy access to federal government services through the use of AI chatbots. The initiative seeks to simplify the process of obtaining federal information and services for all US residents, by offering a unified digital front door for individuals seeking information or assistance from the federal government.

The project is a collaboration between the US government and tech giants Google and xAI, who have supplied the Gemini and Grok AI chatbot technologies, respectively. According to a White House spokesperson, users can complete government transactions without needing to navigate multiple agency websites, provided the services are authorized and available.

However, the site currently appears to be unfinished, with a confusing layout and graphics that reportedly interfere with its readability. Many of the claimed functional capabilities, such as comparing medication costs, updating legal names, and submitting passport applications, are not yet available and are slated to be rolled out over time. A prominent paragraph claiming the chatbots can provide answers from 29,000 government websites is currently inactive, despite the initiative's promises.

The White House has stated that user prompts and responses will not be retained by the AI partners, though a privacy policy mentions that approximate location data may be sent to the AI providers to enhance results. Despite the optimistic claims, critics have pointed out the lack of features and functionality on the site, warning that it may not live up to the administration's promises.

The state of the US Web Design System has also raised concerns about the reliability of government digital services, adding to the skepticism surrounding America.gov.
