Roads Minister urges motorists to drive cautiously on Accra-Kumasi Highway

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has urged motorists to drive cautiously on the Accra-Kumasi Highway while the government works to alleviate congestion and improve the road. In an interview on Tuesday, September 29, Mr Agbodza highlighted that the existing road had exceeded its capacity for years, making it difficult for drivers to maintain a consistent speed, especially during heavy traffic.

He pointed out that congestion sometimes forces some drivers to make dangerous maneuvers in an attempt to navigate through traffic, resulting in accidents. The minister emphasized that these incidents underscore the need for motorists to exercise greater caution as the government works towards resolving the issues on the road.

Agbodza explained that the road's capacity had been surpassed, and drivers have been struggling to maintain a steady pace. He further noted that congestion is a significant factor in risky driving behavior, as some motorists attempt to overtake or maneuver through traffic in ways that put themselves and other road users at risk. "On many occasions, the congestion is what causes some drivers to try dangerous maneuvers that unfortunately ends up in disaster sometimes," he warned.

The government is actively working on addressing the challenges on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, and improvements to the road and expressway are underway. Agbodza expressed gratitude to the highway authorities, consultants, and contractors involved in the project for their efforts so far and for returning to the site. The minister's inspection was part of efforts to assess the road's condition and the progress of the work.

Mr Agbodza called on motorists to exercise restraint, particularly when faced with slow-moving traffic, and cautioned against disregarding road safety rules or driving recklessly once the highway rehabilitation is completed.
