PM Anwar: Professional expertise must go beyond specialisation to bring Malaysia forward

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Malaysia's professionals to broaden their scope beyond narrow specialisation. He emphasized that expertise alone is insufficient for the country's progress. Instead, professionals must integrate their specialised knowledge with a broader understanding of society, culture, and the nation's needs.

"Professionals needed to integrate their specialised knowledge with a broader understanding of society, culture and the country’s needs, rather than working in isolation," he stated during the launch of the Professional Conference and Exhibition 2026 (PROFEX 2026) in Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar highlighted the benefits of professionals from diverse disciplines, races, and regions working together. "What is great about professional life is that it brings together people from different disciplines, different races and different regions," he noted at the event. He stressed that professionals should not differentiate based on race, religion, or region but instead build stronger common ground around principles of right, justice, and fairness.

The Prime Minister emphasized that specialisation should be accompanied by integration, including an understanding of one's responsibilities towards family, society, and the wider world. He urged professionals to speak out against dishonesty, corruption, and abuse, asserting that professional responsibility extends beyond technical expertise.

"Malaysia's future depended on professionals who could work together despite differences in culture and religion, while maintaining a strong commitment to justice and fairness," Anwar stated. He highlighted that Malaysia's future relied on professionals who could transcend cultural and religious differences while upholding strong commitments to justice and fairness.

Anwar's remarks followed his previous call for ethical considerations in technological advancements, including artificial intelligence and digital transformation. At the International Future Conference 2026, he suggested that discussions about the future should incorporate philosophy, history, and moral considerations, not just algorithms, computing power, or economic outcomes.

PROFEX 2026, themed "Uniting Professions, Transforming Malaysia’s Future," aimed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional development among various stakeholders.
