PM Anwar: Professional expertise must go beyond specialisation to bring Malaysia forward

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of Malaysia’s professional community to transcend narrow specialisation and collaborate across disciplines. He stressed that expertise alone is not enough to propel the nation forward. “Professionals need to blend their specialized knowledge with a wider understanding of society, culture, and the country’s needs,” said Anwar, during the kickoff of the Professional Conference and Exhibition 2026 (PROFEX 2026).

Anwar remarked that Malaysia’s strength lies in bringing together people from various disciplines, races, and regions. He urged professionals not to categorize each other based on race, religion, or region, instead, fostering stronger common ground based on what is right, just, and fair. This sentiment was particularly pertinent as Malaysia adapts to rapid technological and economic transformations, giving rise to new fields of expertise such as computing and digital transformation.

The Prime Minister posited that specialisation should go hand in hand with integration, encompassing an awareness of one's duties towards family, society, and the broader world. He further cautioned professionals not to stay silent in the face of dishonesty, corruption, and excesses, highlighting that professional responsibility extends beyond technical proficiency. “No country can thrive in a system that tolerates cheating, corruption, and inefficiencies, and a lack of professionalism,” warned Anwar.

Anwar highlighted that professionals bear the responsibility of bolstering governance and ensuring that systems serve the nation and its people. “Malaysia’s destiny hinges on professionals who can collaborate despite cultural and religious differences, while steadfastly committing to justice and fairness,” he asserted.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come in the wake of his earlier call for grounding technological progress, including artificial intelligence and digital transformation, in ethics, culture, and societal values. At the International Future Conference 2026, Anwar pointed out that discussions on the future should encompass philosophy, history, and moral considerations, not just algorithms, computational power, or economic outcomes.

PROFEX 2026, themed “Uniting Professions, Transforming Malaysia’s Future,” gathered professionals, industry leaders, academics, government agencies, and emerging talent, with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional growth.
