OpenAI launches Dots, its bubbly agentic avatar

On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled Dots, its innovative personal agentic assistant, during the Dev Day event. Dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra and are described as "remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything." Unlike existing tools like Codex and ChatGPT, Dots can operate independently, pursuing user-defined goals continuously in the background with minimal human intervention.

Users can create their own Dots by assigning them names and personalizing their appearance - they resemble small, bubbly cartoon dots. OpenAI envisions users deploying Dots for various tasks, such as monitoring customer feedback, rerunning analysis for scientists, or managing specific responsibilities. Dots can be integrated with organizational platforms like Slack and Teams, and users can communicate with them via text message.

While similar functionality was previously possible through Codex, Dots offers a more streamlined package with a focus on independent agentic actions. OpenAI is collaborating with Microsoft to integrate Dots into Agent 365 security controls. The Dots' persona aims to make AI more relatable and engaging.
