OpenAI announces ChatGPT Dots — here's what the new AI agents can do

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Dots, a new feature that introduces persistent AI agents to the platform. These agents are given their own cloud-based computers, allowing them to perform tasks independently, even when the user is not actively using ChatGPT. This shift in functionality aims to move beyond ChatGPT being a mere question-answering tool, giving it the ability to carry out tasks such as comparing prices, tracking research, and completing administrative duties.

A Dot functions like an independent AI agent, isolated within its own virtual machine. It can browse the web, use connected apps, and interact with services you've connected to it. While the Dot doesn't have access to your personal data, it can connect to over 4,000 apps through plugins, enabling it to work with your existing tools. Users can interact with Dots through voice calls, Slack, Microsoft Teams, and soon, SMS, making them more accessible than ever.

Examples of how Dots could be used include comparing dinner options from multiple restaurants, summarizing interview recordings or video transcripts, and managing administrative tasks like sending invoices. Instead of having to switch between various websites or apps, a Dot can handle these tasks in the background, allowing users to focus on their primary goals.

The cost of Dots will be available to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets, with the first Dot included for free during the first month.
