Two mass shootings in South Africa leave 27 dead

Two mass shootings in South Africa have claimed the lives of 27 people, the latest in a series of gun violence incidents to plague the nation. On Saturday evening, 17 individuals were killed and 15 injured when eight gunmen stormed a bar near Johannesburg, torching two vehicles before fleeing the scene. The following morning, a separate attack in a township near Cape Town left 10 dead and 11 injured as people were shot outside an entertainment venue.

Police have yet to assign a motive to either attack. In Johannesburg, the gunmen targeted customers outside the bar before moving inside and setting ablaze two vehicles. Deputy provincial police commissioner Maj Gen Fred Kekana stated that the attack could have been retaliation for an incident last month, where one person was killed and another injured.

No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning. The two mass shootings occurred days after 11 people were killed in Durban when gunmen stormed a house in the KwaMakhutha township. With illegal weapons prevalent and gun violence a persistent problem, recent mass shootings have raised concerns about the escalating issue, often linked to gang turf wars involving drug trafficking and illegal mining.
