South Africa experienced a tragic weekend as at least 27 people were killed and 26 others wounded in two separate shootings. The first attack occurred on Saturday night in Wedela, Carletonville, in Gauteng, where 17 individuals were killed after gunmen opened fire on patrons outside and inside a tavern. The victims included 13 males and four females, with both South African and foreign nationals among the deceased.

The attackers were reportedly armed with assault rifles and pistols, taking cellphones before fleeing the scene in two unidentified vehicles.

Hours later, ten people were killed and eleven wounded in Lwandle, Cape Town, during a shisanyama venue shooting on Sunday morning. The gunmen entered the entertainment venue, which also sells braaied meat, around 1.46am and began firing at patrons. Five people died at the scene, while five others later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Eleven others were treated for their injuries.

The motive behind the shootings remains unclear, with speculation suggesting the attacks could be linked to retaliation by another gang. Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana stated that investigators have identified some suspects but need time to gather all the necessary information. Lwandle police have opened murder and attempted murder cases, while Western Cape police are actively searching for the perpetrators, with no arrests made so far.

The incidents have highlighted the ongoing issues of gun violence and organized crime in South Africa. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi acknowledged the fear and distrust among community members while emphasizing the measures authorities are taking to combat violent crime. He assured the public that the police investigation would be allowed to proceed without interference.

The government has previously deployed soldiers to violent hotspots in Johannesburg and the Cape Flats, but more capacity is needed to address the growing problem of violent crime.
