Police arrest 64 suspects, recover firearms in Achimota operation

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended 64 individuals in an operation aimed at addressing suspected unlawful firearm and ammunition possession near Achimota Mile 7 in the Greater Accra Region. The operation was carried out by the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police in partnership with the National SWAT. The initiative was sparked by resident complaints concerning potential criminal activities at a lounge and its vicinity, including open firearm displays and potential trading.

During the investigation, officers spotted a blue, unregistered Acura vehicle featuring a pistol holster inside. The vehicle was seized and transported to the Police Headquarters for further scrutiny, following no one at the scene coming forward to claim ownership of the holster. Additionally, a man named Theophilus Ashon was arrested for allegedly posing as a Police officer from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Operations, though verification confirmed he was not a serving Police officer.

A search of Ashon's possession resulted in the recovery of a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with six 9mm rounds. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of a Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills in Atico. Upon searching his residence, authorities found three pump-action guns, four pistols, 62 AA and BB cartridges, 54 rounds of .40-calibre ammunition, and other relevant items.

These 64 suspects are currently under Police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation. The authorities have stated that the suspects will be brought before the court following the conclusion of their inquiries.
