Malaysia, UNODC strengthen cooperation to tackle complex transnational crimes, says Saifuddin Nasution

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail emphasized Malaysia's commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to combat transnational organised crime. The focus of this collaboration was discussed during his final day of a working visit to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, coinciding with the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

The duo discussed the evolving landscape of transnational organised crime, with particular attention paid to the exploitation of digital technology by criminal networks to conduct activities across borders and jurisdictions. Saifuddin highlighted the strategic importance of Malaysia's central location in Southeast Asia, acknowledging the need for integrated enforcement, prevention, and the cutting off of illicit financial flows.

The discussions further delved into tackling cyber-enabled organised crime, human trafficking, and contraband smuggling, as well as the misuse of emerging technologies by criminal networks. Malaysia recognised UNODC's role in supporting ASEAN countries through regional capacity building, information sharing, and the exchange of best practices.

Saifuddin stressed the importance of strong cooperation networks with regional and international partners in safeguarding Malaysia's security amidst the ever-evolving and expanding cross-border threats.
