Hasmah was in good spirits on the eve of her death, says Mokhzani

Dr Hasmah Ali, the wife of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, passed away on the morning of August 29, 2022, at the age of 100. Her son, Mokhzani Mahathir, revealed that she had been in good spirits the night before her death, according to a statement made to reporters in Putrajaya. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly, leaving her doctors with no other option than to declare her death.

Mokhzani recounted that they had visited Hasmah at the National Heart Institute the previous night, when she was described as cheerful and animated. But when they returned the following morning, the situation had taken a sudden and irreversible turn. The 100-year-old's heart had begun experiencing complications around 8 a.m., prompting doctors to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. She was subsequently transferred to the coronary care unit (CCU).

Her brother, Mukhriz Mahathir, detailed the harrowing events that transpired in the hours leading up to her death. He stated that her heart continued to deteriorate, leading to her cardiopulmonary arrest. Upon reaching the CCU, Hasmah was transferred to the care of her father, who remained by her side until the very end. Mukhriz expressed his father's devastation upon learning of Hasmah's demise, emphasizing that their 70-year marriage had seen his mother always prioritize the well-being and future of the nation.

In a touching tribute, Mukhriz highlighted his mother's unwavering commitment to the people and the nation, stating that she had always thought about their future until her very last breath. The former Kedah menteri besar also noted the profound impact his mother had on the country, underscoring her legacy as a devoted mother and dedicated healthcare professional.
