Young Sharks rise to the occasion as Pietersen hails next generation

JP Pietersen was thrilled to witness the young Sharks players rise to the challenge in their opening match of the United Rugby Championship season. The Ospreys suffered a heavy defeat, 41-24, as the Sharks displayed remarkable speed, intensity, and a relentless attack. With star players such as Siya Kolisi, Grant Williams, and Aphelele Fassi away on international duty, the young talent had to step up.

The standout performance belonged to 20-year-old Luan Giliomee, who dazzled the spectators with his blistering breaks. Pietersen acknowledged the player movement as part of professional rugby, accepting that Giliomee was moving on, joining the Bulls. However, there are several other young Sharks who have recently renewed their contracts, including Jurenzo Julius and Vusi Mjolo.

Pietersen expressed his anxiety as a coach before the match, but the young backline quickly proved their worth within minutes. He praised Giliomee's exceptional talent, noting his understanding of the game, speed, and kicking ability. Another young player, Janco Purchase, who had replaced Murray Koster at the last minute, was also outstanding. Pietersen highlighted Purchase's professionalism and the potential the young player showed on the pitch.

Pietersen also commended the Sharks' development system, which cultivates talent from the bottom up. He believed that the junior system equips young players to handle the challenges at the URC level. With their next match against Leinster, the Sharks will face a tougher test.
