Following Texas' Week 4 win over Tennessee, Simmons recorded a career-high five sacks but also faced an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for simulating urination on the field. Eagles Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit publicly criticized Simmons for the gesture.

While Simmons apologized afterward, Sarkisian briefly removed him from the game to discuss the matter before reintegrating him. Sarkisian stated that while the action cannot continue, he chose not to impose the death penalty on Simmons. He acknowledged the need to address the issue moving forward and control emotions better. The coach also suggested that the media's desire for clicks on social media might contribute to such incidents, urging players to focus on the team rather than seeking personal attention.

Despite the controversy, Sarkisian highlighted Simmons' impressive performance, and the team will have a bye week to work on the issue before facing Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry.
