Thousands evacuated amid Bangkok floods

Rain eased in Bangkok on Sunday, but persistent flooding continued in several low-lying areas, forcing thousands to seek refuge in temporary shelters. At least eight people lost their lives in the past 10 days across Thailand due to the flooding. The city experienced days of non-stop downpours, leading to widespread flooding and significant disruptions to traffic and businesses. The accumulated rainfall in many areas surpassed 30 centimeters (11.8 inches).

The Thai Meteorological Department predicted moderate to heavy rain would continue in several regions of the country on Sunday, with conditions expected to improve by Monday. In response to the ongoing floods, Bangkok set up over 200 temporary shelters, with approximately 3,000 people still residing in them as of Sunday. Currently, 31 roads remain affected by floodwaters.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reported that rainfall in the capital has diminished, and city officials are striving to drain water as rapidly as possible. However, he warned that water levels in the city's primary canals remain high, with some still rising as water continues to flow in from surrounding areas. Several low-lying regions, particularly in the suburbs, are still submerged, and many communities have been compelled to evacuate.

As of Sunday, more than 545,000 individuals in 25 provinces other than Bangkok have been affected by flooding, primarily in the central and eastern regions, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul directed relevant authorities to take prompt measures to alleviate the situation and aid those impacted.
