Rain eases in Bangkok but persistent flooding forces thousands to leave home

Rain eased in Bangkok, Thailand's capital, on Sunday, yet persistent flooding forced thousands to relocate to temporary shelters. At least eight individuals have been reported deceased in the past ten days due to the flooding across the nation. Although rain had subsided, several low-lying areas remained submerged, particularly in the suburbs.

Bangkok's Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, noted that rainfall has diminished, and city authorities are actively draining water to mitigate the situation. More than 545,000 residents in 25 provinces have been affected by the flooding, with the majority impacted in the central and eastern regions. Thailand's Meteorological Department predicts moderate to heavy rain will continue in several parts of the country, though conditions are anticipated to improve by Monday.

The city has established over 200 temporary shelters, with approximately 3,000 people currently residing in them. Thirty-one roads are still hindered by floodwaters. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has directed authorities to swiftly address the crisis and support those impacted, including suspending several long-distance train and bus services. Airports remain operational, although passengers may experience minor delays.
