Tenth woman’s body found as South Africa police probe killings

South African police have discovered the tenth dead body of a woman in the Ekurhuleni region, east of Johannesburg, according to local police officials. The victim's identity has not been made public, but a friend recognized her clothes from a previous encounter with police, according to a report by SABC. The local police commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, acknowledged the possibility of a serial killer, noting similarities between the ten deaths in Ekurhuleni and another murder in Soweto.

The deaths have sparked outrage over the high levels of violence against women in the country, which has some of the highest rates of gender-based violence globally. Police are gathering evidence at the scene and have not ruled out the possibility of a serial killer, but have not confirmed this at this stage. The recent killings have raised concerns about public safety, especially for young women, who have been predominantly found dead in similar circumstances since July. Three men have appeared in court previously accused of involvement in some of the prior murders.
