Kuching South mayor lodges police report over ‘malicious’ remarks against him, family

On September 27, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng reported the recent malicious statements made against him and his family to the police. Wee emphasized that such behavior is a violation of democratic principles, as people should be free to criticize policies and services, but not resort to personal attacks. During a live Facebook session, Wee called for a responsible approach to online discussions, urging netizens to focus on beneficial actions for the community rather than engaging in personal assaults.

He made it clear that public debates should center on accomplishments for the people and sincere community service. The mayor's primary goal in organizing various city council events is to benefit the public, not to promote himself. Wee highlighted that some events receive support from the private sector or corporations as part of their CSR efforts.

In such cases, the council evaluates whether the event will genuinely benefit the community before deciding to sponsor it. Wee cited the 'Madani Sales' campaigns as examples, stressing that the council's main consideration was the tangible benefits these initiatives would bring to residents. He reiterated his commitment to serving all Kuching South residents and supporting events that provide genuine advantages.

While acknowledging the presence of differing opinions and the right to criticize authorities, Wee urged people not to assume the council used public resources for personal gain. Instead, he encouraged them to seek a better understanding of the actual circumstances. If people genuinely believe the initiatives are not beneficial, they are free to criticize, but if an initiative genuinely benefits the people, it should not be criticized.

As a civil servant, Wee's priority is to fulfill his duties and serve the people through concrete actions, rather than engaging in arguments or comparing himself to others. He acknowledged that no administrative system is perfect and that the focus should be on reviewing and rectifying mistakes while keeping the public informed about the direction of future development.

The mayor emphasized that the initiatives currently driven by MBKS are not meant for personal gain but are undertaken for the sake of future generations.
