Thailand: Bangkok Flooding Triggers Disaster Declaration

Bangkok authorities declared a disaster across 50 districts on Saturday following days of heavy rainfall that triggered severe flooding. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt noted that the eastern parts of the city were the most affected. The situation posed a threat to life, prompting an emergency advisory for people living near canals to move their possessions to higher ground. Bangkok city officials also opened shelters for evacuees.

Rainfall in Bangkok has been intense, with almost 300 millimeters (11.8 inches) of rain falling since Thursday afternoon. The governor warned that more rain was expected, urging residents to move their possessions to higher ground as every canal was already filled. Chadchart Sittipunt expressed concern over the rising water levels, reaching up to waist level for local vendors. The risk areas are those living near canals.

The flooding evoked memories of the deadly 2011 deluge, which caused over 500 deaths and damaged millions of homes. Thailand's Meteorological Department warned that the heavy rain would continue across the country through Sunday, citing a strong low-pressure system dominating the central region and strengthening monsoon conditions.
