Heavy rain and flooding in Bangkok disrupts traffic and prompts evacuations

Bangkok, Thailand's bustling capital, faced a deluge of heavy rain from Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning, causing widespread disruption and prompting evacuations. Continuous downpours inundated several areas, particularly in the central and eastern parts of the city, with floodwaters exceeding 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) in major canals, according to officials.

The heavy rain overwhelmed Bangkok's drainage system, blocking roads and halting traffic. As of Saturday, over 84,000 individuals in 21 provinces across the country were affected by the flooding. To alert residents, Thailand's Meteorological Department issued emergency messages via cell broadcast systems.

The Bangkok Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, anticipated continued heavy rain through Saturday, with floodwaters expected to recede once the downpours ceased. Emergency shelters were established to house those displaced by the flooding, and government facilities were opened to provide vehicle parking for stranded residents. City officials were working diligently to drain the floodwaters and restore normalcy to the city.
