Thailand: Bangkok flooding triggers disaster declaration

Thailand's capital, Bangkok, declared a disaster across 50 districts on Saturday following days of heavy rainfall that triggered severe flooding. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt highlighted that the eastern parts of the city were hit the hardest. The situation posed a threat to lives, prompting emergency advisories for residents living near canals to relocate their possessions to higher ground.

Over 300 millimeters (11.8 inches) of rain had fallen since Thursday afternoon, with more rain expected. The persistent rain led Governor Sittipunt to warn of worsening conditions, emphasizing the need to pump out water as canals were already full. Risk areas were identified as those residing near canals. Governor Sittipunt urged bedridden patients reliant on life-saving medical equipment to consider temporary hospital stays.

Local vendor Somkid Pheuk-ngam, who had closed her shop for two days due to flooding, expressed the severity of the current situation, noting it was worse than the 2011 flood. The 2011 flooding in Thailand resulted in over 500 deaths and significant damage to millions of homes. The Meteorological Department forecasted continued heavy rain across most parts of the country through Sunday, attributing the heavy rain to a strong low-pressure system dominating the central region and intensifying monsoon conditions.
