Heavy rain and flooding in Bangkok disrupts traffic and prompts evacuations

From Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning, Bangkok, Thailand experienced continuous heavy rain that led to severe flooding in several areas of the city. Major canals filled with water, surpassing 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) in some places, causing water to spread across the city, particularly in the central and eastern regions.

Roads and traffic were blocked due to the flooding. The Thai Meteorological Department predicted that the heavy rain would continue through Sunday, citing a low-pressure system over central Thailand and strengthening southwest monsoon conditions.

Over 84,000 people in 21 provinces nationwide were affected by the flooding as of Saturday, mainly in the central region. Authorities issued emergency warnings through cell-broadcast systems to residents in affected areas. In Bangkok, downpours were observed throughout Friday, with heavy rain persisting into Saturday. Photos and videos captured major roads submerged and cars abandoned due to the rising water.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that heavy rain was expected to continue through Saturday, but flooding was anticipated to recede once the rain ceased. Emergency shelters were established for displaced residents, and some government facilities were opened to provide parking. Bangkok was declared a disaster zone in all 50 districts due to the severe flooding.
