PM slams big companies making huge profits but pay low wages

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has pledged to negotiate with large private companies to increase wages in line with rising productivity levels. In a recent statement, Anwar, who serves as both the Prime Minister and Finance Minister, expressed disappointment that some large companies are maintaining low wages despite earning significant profits over the years.

He cited a study he conducted, comparing productivity and wage trends in South Korea, where a correlation between high productivity and higher wages exists. Anwar emphasized that Malaysia's productivity is growing, yet wages remain disappointingly low. He reiterated his desire for stronger actions, stating that he intends to present these proposals in the upcoming 2027 budget.

However, Anwar clarified that legal action against companies to force wage hikes would not be an option, as it could lead to business relocation to other countries. Instead, he advocated for constructive negotiations with the private sector to achieve a fair wage adjustment that benefits all workers, not just Bumiputera citizens.
