Iran awaits US move after WSJ report says Trump rejects peace plan

Iran is awaiting a response from the United States following a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the ongoing Middle East conflict, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The proposal was discussed at the UN General Assembly in New York, with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating that a seven-day countdown would begin if the US agreed to the terms.

Iran would also lift its blockade on Iranian ports, release frozen funds, and waive oil sanctions as part of the proposed deal. However, Trump's administration is reportedly skeptical of Iran's willingness to meet his demands, believing a renewed bombing campaign is likely after the November US midterm elections. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed readiness for talks on the nuclear program and other issues, but emphasized that Iran would not accept bullying or coercion.

The conflict, which began in February, has resulted in thousands of deaths and damaged Iran's ailing economy, with Iran and its allies extending the war to other regions.
