Iran awaits US move after WSJ report says Trump rejects peace plan

Iran prepared for a potential response from the US following a Wall Street Journal report claiming President Donald Trump had rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end conflict in the Middle East. The Iranian plan, put forth at the United Nations General Assembly, would open the strategic waterway and cease hostilities within seven days, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

If the US agreed, talks could expand to include discussions on Iran's nuclear program and other subjects. However, Iran would not budge on its right to enrich uranium or export enriched uranium, according to a senior Iranian official. The US had expressed cautious optimism about the talks, though President Trump privately doubted Iran's willingness to meet his demands.

The Iran-US conflict, which began seven months ago, had disrupted oil flows and caused economic strain. Iran and its allies continued to engage in hostilities throughout the region, with Saudi Arabia and its allies uniting to strengthen defenses in response to the widening war. The UN's children's agency reported a growing humanitarian crisis in Yemen due to the violence.
