China says it ‘respects’ Trump’s ‘super intelligence’ switch from AI

Beijing has stated that China "respects" the United States' decision to replace the term "artificial intelligence" with "super intelligence" in official communications. This change was announced by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The US administration's shift in terminology was high on the agenda during the recent summit between the two world powers. After the summit, Trump posted on his social media platform that Xi had appeared to like the rewording, calling it "far more accurate and important."

While the Chinese foreign ministry did not explicitly confirm or deny Trump's characterization of their discussion, it stated that China attaches importance to the US position and respects the US wording. A ministry spokesman added that China and the US agreed to establish a communication channel for AI incidents, as both sides seek to strengthen exchanges and seek consensus on the latest developments in the technology.

Despite Trump's dismissal of fears surrounding AI's potential threat to humanity, Xi has taken a more measured approach, emphasizing that the technology must be developed under human control.
