China says it ‘respects’ Trump’s ‘super intelligence’ switch from AI

Beijing has stated that China respects the United States' decision to refer to artificial intelligence as "super intelligence" after Donald Trump's remarks during a recent summit. The US President announced on Tuesday that his administration would rename AI as SI in official communications. During his post-talks social media post, Trump wrote that Xi, like "almost everyone else", seemed to prefer the rewording, describing AI as a "far more accurate and important name" called SUPER INTELLIGENCE.

While China has not explicitly confirmed or denied Trump's characterization of the discussion, the foreign ministry said on Saturday that it attaches importance to the US side's position and respects its wording. The ministry emphasized the need for all parties to strengthen exchanges, discuss in-depth, and seek consensus on the latest developments of AI technologies.

Following the summit, both China and the US agreed to set up a communication channel for AI incidents. Despite Trump's repeated dismissals of AI-related threats, Xi has taken a more measured tone, stating that the technology must develop under human control.
