China says it ‘respects’ Trump’s calling AI ‘super intelligence’

BEIJING, Sept 26 - China's foreign ministry has stated that the United States' shift in terminology from "artificial intelligence" to "super intelligence" is respected. This change was announced by President Donald Trump during the recent summit between US and Chinese leaders. Trump stated on Tuesday that his administration would use "super intelligence", or SI, in official communications instead of the term "artificial intelligence".

Although China has not explicitly confirmed or denied Trump's description of the discussion, Beijing's foreign ministry expressed its importance on Saturday. According to the ministry, the US's adoption of the term "super intelligence" is "important" to China. The ministry spokesperson said, "Regarding the artificial intelligence phrasing question, the Chinese side attaches importance to the US side's position and respects the US side's wording."

Both countries agreed to establish a "communication channel" for AI incidents, as reported after the summit. Billionaire Donald Trump has consistently dismissed concerns about AI posing a threat to humanity. However, Chinese leader Xi Jinping took a more cautious approach, stating that the technology must be developed under human control.
